While Shelleyan Orphan were often labelled as dream pop and ethereal, their debut Helleborine (1987) fits comfortably as chamber pop. With hushed harpsichords, clarinets, and Cocteau Twins-influenced vocals, Helleborine is fantastic poppy ethereal - light, wistful, but still stirring.
Their next two albums were less enchanting, but singer Caroline Crawley lent her voice to some of the strongest tracks on This Mortal Coil’s Blood (1991) and later went on to form “worldbeat” group Babacar.
